How to get rid of fleas in the house
Flea infestations have to be hit on three fronts at once — pet, home, and yard — or they bounce back. Their life cycle takes 3–4 weeks, so treatment continues that long even when bites stop. Most cases clear in 4–8 weeks if you stay consistent.
Tools
- ✓Daily vacuuming is the single biggest factor in clearing fleas. A vacuum with a sealed bag is best — empty into outdoor trash immediately.
- ✓Hot wash + hot dry all pet bedding weekly.
- ✓For applying yard treatment.
Materials
- +Oral pill — kills all adult fleas on the pet within 4 hours. Use as a knockdown before starting monthly preventative.
- +Monthly topical preventative. Use vet-recommended brand for your pet's weight and species.
- +For carpets, upholstery, pet bedding. Less toxic, can be used while pets are home.
- +Contains an insect growth regulator (IGR) that prevents eggs and larvae from maturing. The non-negotiable product for breaking the cycle.
- +Hose-end sprayer. Treats lawn perimeter where fleas come from.
- +Dust into carpet, leave overnight, vacuum. Dehydrates flea larvae mechanically.
Steps
-
1
Treat every pet on the same day
Give a Capstar pill (immediate adult kill) AND apply monthly topical preventative. Treat every pet in the house even if only one is scratching.
-
2
Wash all pet bedding hot
Strip pet beds, blankets pets sleep on, throw rugs in pet areas. Wash on hot, dry on HIGH for 60 minutes. Repeat weekly for 6 weeks.
-
3
Vacuum every surface daily
Carpet, upholstery, between couch cushions, under furniture. Vibration triggers pupae to emerge — vacuuming captures them. Discard the vacuum bag in outdoor trash immediately.
-
4
Spray indoor surfaces with Precor
Apply Precor 2000 to carpets, rugs, upholstery, baseboards, pet sleeping areas. Let dry fully before pets return to the area. Reapply at 4 weeks.
-
5
Treat the yard
Apply Wondercide via hose-end sprayer to the lawn perimeter, under decks, around the dog run, and shady spots where pets rest. Reapply at 4 weeks.
-
6
Stay consistent for the full life cycle
Flea eggs and pupae hatch over 3–4 weeks. Bites may stop in 7–14 days, but if you stop treating, the next wave hatches. Continue all three fronts (pet, home, yard) for at least 8 weeks total.
