How to get rid of Asian lady beetles (the orange 'ladybugs')
Asian lady beetles look like ladybugs but swarm sunny walls of houses in fall, ooze a yellow stain when crushed, and bite. They're trying to overwinter inside. The fix: vacuum (don't crush), seal exterior gaps before October, and use light-trap jars in attic windows.
Tools
- ✓Use a knee-high stocking over the end of the hose, secured with a rubber band — captures beetles without sucking them into the canister so you can release outdoors.

Materials
- +Light-baited jars for windowsills in attics, sunrooms, and upstairs bedrooms — where they cluster.
- +Treat the sunny south/west exterior walls and around windows in late September before they swarm.
- +Seal gaps around window trim, siding seams, soffit/fascia joints, and utility penetrations.
Steps
-
1
Don't crush them — ever
Crushed Asian lady beetles release a yellow reflex bleed that stains walls, fabric, and carpet and smells terrible. They can also bite when handled. Vacuum or sweep instead.
-
2
Vacuum into a stocking
Stretch a knee-high nylon stocking over the end of the vacuum hose and secure with a rubber band. Suck beetles into the stocking, lift it off, tie shut, and release in a wood pile far from the house — or freeze and discard.
-
3
Seal the exterior before they swarm
By late September: caulk around windows, soffit gaps, utility penetrations, and any siding seams on the sunny side of the house. Once they're inside the walls, they're hard to get out.
-
4
Spray the sunny walls
Late September, treat the south- and west-facing exterior walls and around upper-story windows with a pyrethrin spray. This kills the scout beetles before they release the gathering pheromone.
-
5
Set light traps in attic windows
Indoors, place BeetleEater or Beapco traps on sunny windowsills, especially in attics, sunrooms, and upstairs rooms where beetles cluster.
-
6
Don't bother with bug bombs
Foggers don't reach the wall voids where the beetles hide and they leave residue everywhere. Vacuum + perimeter spray is more effective.
